Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia with a prevalence of about 1-2% in the general population. Prevalence increases with age; it is estimated to be approximately 10% in individuals 80 years of age. Atrial fibrillation is associated with several risk factors such as atherosclerosis and hypertension. Genetic factors are estimated to account for about 30% of the cases.
